Some Q&A’s from an interview with Stef Desmet, co-founder and commercial manager

Q: Can you explain how this new disinfection system works?

A: Researchers have been searching for decades to find an alternative disinfection system for chlorine, as everybody knows that the current chlorine levels are harmful. The reason they failed is that disinfection forms an integral part of total water treatment. The disinfection is only efficient when your water treatment works well. That is why we call it a water treatment system and not a disinfection system.

Q: I understand your point, but you did not explain how this water treatment system works  and why it is so efficient.

A: Now it becomes technical. In a nutshell, it is based on a central disinfection system with electrochemical hydrolysis, UV and copper ionisation, combined with a carbon-pH-mineralising technique, all  controlled by a central control unit.

Q: That sounds quite complicated…

A: It is. If it would have been easy, we would all swim now in low chlorine public pools.

Q: But it remains complicated and seems very expensive.

A: Complicated doesn’t mean expensive …. That is probably the most interesting part of this concept. We can manufacture this system at a price which is the same as a traditional chlorine and acid installation.  So why should you spend your money on a high chlorine system?

Q: So your system is market proof, but not everyone is convinced yet. This is one of the questions:  You always talk about ‘low’ chlorine, so why not chlorine ‘free’ if your system performs so well?

A: Imagine that 50 children jump into the water; how long do you think the water is free of micro organisms? So, for your safety, in the context of public pools, you always need a basic disinfection capacity with chlorine. Let’s not forget that chlorine is a strong disinfectant and is also used for the safety of drinking water. So, the question is not whether chlorine is needed but how much chlorine is needed.

Q: So, if I understand it correctly, your system makes it possible to minimise the amount of chlorine, in order to guarantee the safety of all swimmers in public swimming pools. But low enough so that there are no major negative side effects?

A: Correct. You have used an interesting word ‘minimise’. I will remember this, it is an interesting way to explain this.

Q: In preparation for this interview I discovered that there already exist chlorine free swimming pool systems, so it looks as if this is not a new idea, and the patent is only a clever marketing tool?

A: The existing systems are based on Ozon, oxidation, peroxide, etc.. and are perfect for private swimming pools where the daily occupation of swimmers is less than 1/day….  The public swimming pools form a completely different market. Remember when I told you, what happens when 50 children jump into the water?

Regarding the patent,  the claims in the patent are all focused on the public swimming pools.  These pools are all controlled by regional health agencies with a strict regulation. There is no regulation or control of private swimming pools. It is a total different market.

Q: But there will in any case be interest from people with private swimming pools. If it is efficient in public pools, it will also be efficient in private pools. Or not?

A: It is. And I can already tell you that we have a ‘compact eco module’ in development for 50-100m³ pools. This is the market of the large private pools, pools at hotels, wellness centres, resorts, therapy pools and small private swimming schools.

Q: In development, you say? When will your plug and play systems be available?

A: Our plug and play models will be presented at the major fairs in 2022 and ready to sell and install.

Q: I have noticed that you are looking for partners and distributors? What is your strategy?

A:  The technology of water treatment of public swimming pools is the same worldwide. But, every country or region has its specific culture, and needs a customised approach to introduce the concept. So only local companies know how to introduce low chlorine swimming. That is why we are looking for regional partners and distributors.

Q: So, to the point, what we all want to know: what is claimed in the patent?

A:  That is why it is called ‘patented’. Sorry.
